Towing

I just purchased a 1979 MGB and will have it delivered on a tow dolly. Is there anything I need to know about this in advance...like disengage the transmission, etc. or will this be no problem?

Sounds like the hardest things are: 1) low hanging stuff being scraped off and 2) disconnecting the driveshaft

If it has wire wheels, DO NOT tow it backwards.

Advise from an old man...rent a trailer if you have more than a couple of miles to tow it. Much fewer hassle and worry and better for the car.

Thanks for the info. I did neglect to mention that it will be towed about 350 miles. I'm looking into towing with a trailer rather than the tow dolly but am not sure as to what class hitch the vehicle has on it (it's my brother-in-law's). If I do have to resort to a tow dolly and tow it on two wheels, does one tow it backwards or no? If I don't disconnect the driveshaft, is that when we tow backwards and lock the steering?

Towing it backwards can produce a couple problems. As I sadi above, wire wheels can't be towed backwards. They will loosen and come off! Ground clearance is also an issue with the front valance.

I agree with those recommending towing on a real trailer. I wouldn't tow a B on a tow dolly for that distance. Just too much hassle with a tow dolly, although some people swear they did it with no problems. Disconnecting the driveshaft is recomended, otherwise.

Thanks so much for all the towing advice! I just towed my '79 B from SC to TN on a trailer and had no worries as I would have if we did it on a tow dolly. After having had it run great for two weeks after two rounds of repairs during the holidays, it wouldn't crank and we had to push if off of the trailer. As my grandmother used to say: "Keep on laughing even when things aren't so funny"!
