Hitches / towing with a midget

Hey there everyone,
a idea has been brought to my mind to install a hitch on my midget, and tow a small 4x4 harbor freight trailer so that I can go camping in my midget.

To give you an idea where this idea is coming from, for my miata a built a travel trailer from scratch since there were no trailers on the market small enough for the miata. Anyways, that project is 80% done, but time is running out for camping, but taking the midget for a camp out seems like a cool idea, except obviously there is not enough trunk space.

Has anyone ever towed with their midget before? and or know of a good hitch configuration?

Of course we have towed. I use to tow a sailfish.

Hitch was a plate about 4 inchs wide and bolted to the brackets that hold the bumpers on. Had a peice welded to it for the ball extenstion.

Add some big washers.

Well that makes me feel better that someone here has towed, over on the miata forum, towing with such a small car is an outrage, did your hitch always have the ball showing though?

I know BillM has a hitch and has towed a trailer cross country behind his Sprite.
He could tell you a lot about doing this, maybe he'll get on here after work!

I do not tow with my miata and I know some members really flame other when they talk about towing with the miata. There are several threads on the Miata forum where members have towed the small trailers with autox tires etc.

I used to tow my C Dragster on a trailer behind my Datsun 2000. It towed it better than my 65 Dodge Dart. People gave me strange looks, since all they could see when overtaking me was the trailer and the dragster and not the car towing it.

When I get my overheating problems solved, I want to tow my 14ft sailboat, but I am still trying to figure how to do it. I want a removable hitch. I used to think it was not possible to tow with certain cars but my whole frame of mind changed when I saw an old hearse pulling a u-haul trailer. Who says you can't take it with you ?

I towed a 4'x5' trailer with my 65 sprite when i moved from Minnesota to Phoenix, AZ. A friend fabricated both the trailer and hitch. I snapped a a rear axle in the middle of no where 50 miles so of las Vegas n.m and 90 miles north of Albuquerque. I looked over the embankment and found i was right in front of the Southern Baptist Conference Center. They had a small garage-auto repair at the facility, took 2 days to scrounge an axle. That was in 1980 when I was young and indestructible.

I still have the car, and it still has the hitch. Good luck with yours.
