Clicking noise when applying brakes

Brakes are working fine apart from a pull to the right under heavy braking but even that's not noticeable under normal driving conditions.

The one thing i am finding though, is that i can hear a sort of double "Click" noise when applying the brakes - and the clicks are at the start of application and about 0.25 of a second apart.

They seem to be only coming from the front right but maybe that's because I'm closes to that wheel. i did have some squealing coming fromt he front right a while ago but that sorted itself out.

Worn pads? Caliper bolts loose? not sure what's going on and I haven't had a look under there yet but as ever I thought I should consult the Oracle.

My first thought is wheel bearing.

My clicks turned out to be loose spokes.

Swap front wheels, side to side, and see if the noise moves with the wheel.

G'day, hope you find the problem.I wanted to suggest you check the splines on the hub and inside the wheel,if they are worn you can get a click, just at the start of braking, and if this is the case,it indicates you may need new wheels and hubs.If you put a new wheel on an worn hub it can transfer the wear to the new part and ultimately damage both.I have seen old hubs spin and lock new wheels on so tight they had to be pried and pounded off.Fortunately in this case the wheel was not damaged, but new hubs were ordered and installed.you can check spokes by pushing against the top of the wheel while it is on the car on the ground,if the wheel moves in and out, spokes will move visibly. Ok, here is a possibility to check out.

Does the clicking only happen a very light braking? Does it go away when under moderate to heavy braking? Are there any pulsations under heavy braking?

I ask because I had a situation several years ago with a clicking sound from the front when going slow (10-30mph) that would go away as soon as I gave moderate braking, or went faster. I have disc wheels so it wasn't loose spokes and I checked the bearings, etc. and found nothing wrong. What I finally found was a rotor that was not uniform thickness...one portion was about .002-.003" thicker that the other half. When driving slow or just very light braking the pads would "lift" in the thick area and then "fall" in the thin area as the rotor turned. The clicking sound was the pads "landing" in the caliper (there is a fair ammount of clearance between the pads and the calipers). Refaced the rotors and never heard the click again and as a bonus, the braking was noticably smoother - there had been a slight pulsation in braking but so slight I hadn't really noticed it.

good luck,
Dave Phillips
