Transmission Clicking

I took the TR3 out for a drive this morning. A few miles in, I noticed a clicking when in 1st gear. Also happens in reverse. All other gears are quiet. Car drives normal but the click is worrisome. Any ideas or thoughts would be great.

Sounds like a chipped tooth on the 1st-reverse gear.

Had this happen to my first TR3, drove it for a couple of years with no further problems.

Drain the oil from the trans and if the tooth (or chip) doesn't come out with oil, fish around in the trans with a magnet. Once it comes out and you don't push 1st too hard, all will probably be ok.

OR

rebuild the trans and replace the broken gear.

There are only two options to be considered.

That's what happened with the TR3 overdrive I put in my TR4A when I restored it as well. :frown:

Not very often we get concurrence like this. I guess that's what happens when you muscle that non synchro gear enough.

The funny part is the warning in the "tips" manual not ot downshift to 1st above 15 MPH...! More like 1 MPH.

Heel and toe, match the revs and double clutch will work about 50% of the time at 15 mph, after you get good at it. The other fifty breaks the bits off the gear.

I have the same thing. Must be common as I remember my dad's doing the same thing. Not looking forward to that eventual fix = \
