General MG Transmission Fluid Level

How to check the transmission fluid level on a 1961 MG Midget, 1275 cc? I have put the recommended amount of fluid in but i want to make sure it is enough and my calculations were correct. My thoughts--take the rubber off the side of the crankcase and remove the filler nut. If when I can put my finder in the hole and feel fluid no more than 1/8" inch down, then there is the correct amount of fluid. Yes,/no?

Is there a replacement plug/nut for the original one that is easier to take off and put on?

tks.

When the plug is out of the left side of the transmission case, use that hole to fill and fill until it runs out of the hole. The hole sets a level that is just low enough to keep lube from leaking out of the transmission thru fron and rear seals. If it comes out the front, it can get on the clutch. As for terminology, the crankcase is the lower part of the block/oil pan where the crankshaft is located. The rubber plug you are probably talking about would be in the transmission tunnel to allow access to the filler plug. I've never found on that is super easy to remove and replace, but they do stiffen with age.
