TR6 What's that knocking noise?

I was doing some work on my 6 to get it ready for the driving season. I heard a "knocking" noise coming from the front passenger wheel; with every rotation of the wheel there was a distinct knock. It did not sound like a bearing since a bearing makes more of a grinding noise. My best guess was that it was coming from the cotter pin that locks the castellated nut in place. I pulled the small grease cap and the cotter pin was not the problem so I pulled the hub and found a bolt had worked its way loose. What is worse, is that the small lock tab that keeps the bolt from loosening was never bent up. There is only one person to blame and that would be me.

Thanks Tom... It can only be me. It's hard to imaging that I bent the locking tab up and the bolt still came loose.

Elliot, I remember the first thing that I needed to fix after my TR6 restoration was the exact same thing....I had bent the tabs over, and I had torqued the bolts, but somehow, all 4 fasteners were loose and I could feel it while I was driving. Since then, I always blue loctite those fasteners and use the locking tabs.

I guess those tabs are better than nothing, but in my experience, they promise more than they deliver. The Loctite is a good idea. You can get a "primer" that will improve its holding--especially if you are using it on nonferrous metals.
