Triple Carb Intake

My Goodparts intake arrived today. They sure are pretty.
I found that the mounting flange on the header is .030 thicker than the flanges on the intakes. I feel that is a little too much for a heavy gasket and the header will need cut to match.
Has anybody else run into this?

You can have a good muffler shop face the header although I doubt that they can accurately machine it down evenly this .030ths to your satisfaction. Your other option is a machine shop where they will also extract your eye teeth. (Ask me how I would know this.) I also modified ever so slightly the little forged hold down brackets (4 or 5?) by grinding one of the little nipples a bit, on the aluminum side. Also, try to avoid anything but a stock gasket. Those "header gaskets" are thick paper and will burn out in a year. A real PITA.

Also note that when you hold your new intake up to the head, there will probably be some offset on one or more of the tubes when bolted up to the head. I ended up having my head flowed by the machine shop that shaved my head to better match each other.

Doug,

.030" is the gap on a spark plug and just about the size of the raised portion that Bill speaks of on the clamps between the intake and the exhaust manifolds. I would grind that off and hook it up.

I had my clamps powder coated with high temp coating to prevent any discoloration on the manifolds. Overkill perhaps, but that's just me. They will rust if not painted.

After you get it mounted the alignment fun begins with the carb shafts. Don't get frustrated, just take your time and we'll get you through it.

Thanks for the ideas. A lot of work ahead before they make it onto the car.
Fortunately, I'm working on a head in a warm basement and can use it to set things up.
It's been a little brisk in this direction of the country lately.

The little nibs on the bottom of the retainers (clamps for lack of a better word) that go over the studs between the intake and exhaust manifold, which the nut tightens down to hold in place. Take one side and grind off the nib and it should fit nicely.

That's what I thought you said. Just clarifying.
Thanks Paul

I understand Don. Now that I look at it again, it was pretty poor vocabulary on my part.
