Exhaust System

Would like imput on the size of exhaust pipes. I have a 1098 bored out to 40 over, APT street preformance cam, Pace header and a Monza exhaust. I'm ready to install a one peice pipe from the header to muffler and would like to have it mandrel bent so it goes up and over the rear axle so the muffler will not hang so low. The smallest that can be bent this way is 2" dia. Will the increase in size from 1 3/4" to 2" cause me any problems in lost torque? I can go with crush bent pipe, but am worried that I would end up with an ID less than 1 3/4" if I stay with current size(1 3/4") and don't want to restrict the exhaust flow. Anyone one have experence going either way with this?

Gary, Hey Bugsy my '68 Sprite has a 1098 as well. You're not alone. A little more power would be appreciated but right now happy to have Bugsy running sweet once again.

Seen a lot of people keep it straight all the way back and use a harley slip on at the very end and then it doesn't hang any lower than one like you are talking about. Those slip ons are always on Ebay pretty cheap and brand new where folks have taken them off for louder aftermarket slip ons and want to get rid of the quiet ones.

Thanks guys,for your responses. But.........I have a problem. After getting the car back after a year rebiuld, we had our first road trip on Sunday. Went to the Eastern Shore of Maryland to Punkin'in Chunk'in. Ever seen a punkin(thats what they call'em over there) fly over 4,000ft? Pretty impressive. Made it home Ok. Monday after work I was on the way to the muffler shop so they could take a look. About a mile from the house the car filled with smoke. Turned Little Red off, got her off the road, popped the hood, yea, no flames. Got the fire extinguisher from the trunk(every LBC should have one on board)and looked under the dash after the smoke cleared.
A wire that is conected to the ignition switch was FRYED. After that, one could say that I needed to check my shorts! No damage to the car other that replacing some wiring. Guess it will be awhile before I worry about exhaust issues.

Were it me, based on the angle I see in the photos, I'd rotate that rear pipe 180-degrees so the exhaust is pushed downwards not up into the sky.

You're right Tony. Not only in the direction of the exhaust, but also due to the fact that it'll give you some extra clearance if you have to back up out of a steep driveway.

Yeah, I know how *that* feels.

If it sticks around I might try it. Just need to get some reducers. I'm really interested to hear what it sounds like. When I went to fit it, I managed to refit my Monza pipe which was too low and too far out and frequently hit, now it never does and looks much better, sounds good too. Only reason for the Harley test is potentially different sound, that fat pipe looks cool too. The slash cut is angled up because the mounting point is on that side, I'm sure you could finagle something to flip it.

1-1/2" EMT electrical conduit is 1.74" OD. Makes great exhaust pipe when you need it on a Sunday. That being said, if you need a mandrel bend make friends with an electrician. The standard radius on their 1-1/2" bender is something like 8" or 9".

You could probably do that with a Chicago bender but to do a proper mandrel bend, you have to have something inside. Conduit benders don't have and inside piece but make sweet bends. I band conduit but I could never bend 1 1/2 anywhere close to the needed radius for that. You might get 1" to work. I thought of running 4 separate 3/4" stainless out the back just to see what that sounds like.
