TR6 72 tr6 exhaust system

My exhaust system on my 72 tr6 is on it's last legs. I'm considering a stainless steel replacement of the stock system. I asked my my mechanic if those sport systems (Monza etc..) made any improvement in performance. He stated he didn't think so and that they were a pain in the ass to install. I'm looking at a Falcon system. Any info would be appreciated.

I have a TR7 that I upgraded to a Monza free flow system (couldn't afford the Falcon system). I've been happy with it, and it only took me about an hour to install it
(having access to a lift and saws-all helped). My mechanic and mentor also advised against it (he's an "original" purist) but after installing it he agreed that the car looks and sounds much better. As far as performance, I "think" it helped some, but that could be just because the car sounds so much better. I have heard other owners, especially Spit owners, with this system complain that it's too loud. However, on the highway I only pull about 3200 rpm at 65, while they are pulling around 4000.

I'm thinking of putting a Monza on my 72 TR6 as well. I too have heard from a Spitfire owner that his exhaust is to loud. He says he likes the tone of the Monza, but wants it a little quieter.

The Pacesetter Monza system is not optimal. It's extremely loud and leaks fumes into the cockpit unless extra care is taken to seal all the connections. It is also prone to rapid rusting, especially if you're in a moist climate such as here in VA.

The excessive noise at highway speeds is enough give headaches to some folks, especially with your top down.

I might suggest that if you intend to keep your car for awhile, consider a stainless steel system. They're worth the extra cost in the long run and will last practically forever. They also tend to be a bit more quiet than the Monza.

EVeryone has different tolerances for exhaust sound. But remember, the original exhaust system on TR6s (and GT6, and Spitfires) was VERY quiet, certainly no louder than most modern sports cars today.

In fact, the original systems are too quiet for my likes. But I think the Monza loudness is off the scale.

Is the "Pacesetter Monza" system the one that the "big three" carry in their catalogs? I didn't realize that it's that loud!

When you talk about a stainless steel system, are you still talking about a "free flow" system?

I'd like to get a bit more horsepower through the system, but am also not interested in anything too loud. The stainless system sounds like the way to go, but here in Central Cali, moisture and rust are not very common! (mentally, that helps to offset the 110 degree summers!)

pretty much as a rule, the more free flow an exhaust is, the louder the exhaust is going to be. Free flow generally equals performance, however in most engines you do want a little back pressure (unless its a turbo.) Dont be overly concerned though, because back pressure shouldnt be an issue on a "normal" diameter exhaust system with mufflers.

dont quote me on this, but the shorter the exhaust pipes + greater diameter = louder. Mufflers help mellow everything out. Catalitic converters will also help make it quieter, but eat up performance. As for the mufflers real quick, most brands have a particular "sound" that characterizes them. check with guys who have exhaust work on their cars and see what you think!

I live in the nevada high desert, and here its dry as can be. But i still went with stainless on my daily driver because its less prone to burning out like other metals will. Stainless will basically last you forever.

Your choices for the TR6 are as follows:
Stock steel mufflers - quiet, easy to mount because the hardware is available, will last quite a few years.
Stainless stock-style mufflers - same as above but will last forever.
Monzas - you had better bring along some Advil, also a pain to mount, last about 1-2 years because they are made with cheap iron but they can act as a substitute for Viagra because they will give you an erection.
Falcon stainless sport - very hard to get, very hard to mount, sound great (not as loud as Monzas) and hang VERY low so you will eventually knock them off. Last forever (till you knock them off)

I currently am running Monzas as temporary mufflers, have kept the mufflers for the Falcons because I have some really cool tips (https://members18.clubphoto.com/bmcno759506/2145310/guest.phtml) (picture 1010073) Will reorder the down-pipe back to my modified mufflers when I get a pro to help me mount the darn things right.

Oh, and for those of you that look at details, my bumper really needs to be rechromed. Too, the black on the rear is that Krylon Semi Flat Black that I have railed about as being the perfect paint for this app.

While I do plan on spending some time in the car, you are probably right. Plus, by the time I get the rest of the stuff done to the car, there will need to be some economizing done!

Personally I think the Monza exhaust and Pacesetter headers are crap, but that's just my opinon.

Don't forget that when the TR-6 was being developed, they experimented with the exhaust system by sticking broomsticks into the exhaust to get the right sound. A TR-6 with the standard exhaust has the best sound this side of a big Healy.

I totally agree.....Why mess with aftermarket stuff and take a chance on messing up that trademark exhaust sound of the TR6? It's part of what makes these cars headturners.

Two years ago I pourchased a flow thru double muffler system from a place in Canada called Double S exhaust. There is no question that the car is louder, but it also makes it easier for all of those SUV's out there to know that you are around. It is stainless steel, and the price was extremely reasonable. I don't know if they sell a hangar kit, but you can order the hanger kit from Moss or the others. Just make sure it is for the sport exhaust to match.

I think that they also make a stainless model the same as the stock. I was going for the extra ponies. They are very nice people. Try to find them on the web.

As a early Tr owner back in the 70's I worked at a foreign parts place where we sold ANSA. I installed a late model twin manifold on my TR250 & the full twin ANSA system with the four chrome tips. It sounded really sweet, yet not too loud. A thread about getting ANSA to remaufacture this unit again came up a while ago, but In haven't seen anything else about it. Someone on the site was speaking to ANSA & had a contact we should poss. send some e-mails of interest to & see if they wil reman these units.

I'm running another TR250 & would love to have the same system.

Any interest?

I agree that the Ansa setup is the best (I have one on my 72 TR6), but worry that it will eventually need replacing. i have the Monza system on my 73 TR6...i think it sounds great. i don't find it annoying at all fitment is fine...it bolted right up. it actually came with the car when we bought it, so you can't really beat free. HTH

I tend to agree with Steven and Bill's posts, the stock system sounds great, and was efficiebt enough for the fuel injected English market cars to produce quite a bit more power so shouldn't be too restrictive.
Like the stainless idea for durability, the tone may be a little "tinny" at first, until some carbon builds up.
Maybe I'm too old but I'm starting to find too much noise irritating and anti-social!
