TR3 Rebuild Update...
Well, the front suspension is done...for the most part. I have totally disassembled all of the suspension pieces, cleaned, bead-blasted and painted all of the parts. In addition, I've installed new upper ball joints, lower trunions, all bushings and seals, springs (heavy-duty), OEM-style shocks, upper & lower bump stops, silent-bloc bushings and idler arm & bracket (the original idler arm was virtually frozen solid). The steering column is being powder coated as we speak. It will receive a new steering arm, oil seal, bearings, anti-rattle O-rings, felt seal, gaskets and gear lube (it was bone-dry when I took it apart). I also have a front and rear sway bar to install. I have to say that this has been a very labor-intensive project, but needles to say, the TR should drive like a dream!
I just got the engine block back from being cleaned, and the crank, rods, pistons, flywheel and clutch have been sent out to be balanced. They are also going to turn down the crank for the updated rear oil seal. The engine is getting new pistons and liners (87 mm), main, rod and cam bearings and a pretty 'nice' cam ("D" grind from TSI). The heads have been out for about a month and should be arriving soon. I went with the oversize valves, with Isky springs and retainers. They are also installing valve seats for the exhaust, and machining custom valve guides with oil seals and doing a bit of porting and polishing. But wait, there's more. How about a new rocker rail complete with new rocker arms and bushings and adjusters.
As far as the interior...new seat frames, seat springs and padding, seat tracks and covering (I went with the vinyl instead of the leather, because we get a lot of sudden showers here in Florida, and I know from experience that I WILL get caught in the rain). And finally, new door and trim panels, complete back seat, and carpet.
It should look and drive great. I hope to be back on the road within 3 weeks. That, of course, depends on what the worst powerful hurricane in recorded history decides to do over the next couple of days. The projected storm track brings the eye right over the top of West Palm.
Wish me luck...
