TR2/3/3A TR3 Rear Hub rebuild continued

Removed the two half-shafts and delivered them to the rebuilder today. Now there is an inner oil seal in the axle tube (I received new seals as part of the rebuild kit). How difficult is it to remove this seal? Any tricks to it? Just wanted to ask before I mess something up...

Hi,

That seal is pretty easily removed, but it will be ruined in the process so I hope you don't want to try to reuse it and have new ones handy for installation.

I've used either a slide hammer with a hooked end on it or a three-legged gear puller to pop out those seals. Either will work. It's just a matter of getting a grip on the seal somehow, then bumping it out.

BTW, after installing new seals, check the area they ride on, on the axle. If it's rough with wear spots, the new seal will self-destruct in a short time. There are two ways to deal with it. One is to use a special seal in there that offsets the lip of the seal onto an area of the axle that is still smooth and unworn. The other is to install a Speedi Sleeve on the axle to give the seal a nice new surface to run on.

One last thing, when reinstalling the axles into the tube, be a little careful around the new seals, not to damage the seal lip in any way.

Thanks Alan; I have a small journal bearing puller at work that should do the job, I will borrow it this weekend.

BTW, do you know who sells the special seal with the offset lip? I believe the one that I have from Moss is the original sytle.
