Quick followup to my post on the front brakes. Just putting the rears together. My shop manual shows no "steady" springs on the rear shoes. My backing plates have a spot for these springs (perhaps new aftermarket parts not certain as they came with car) and I did buy some steady springs from TRF, but they seem to make the shoes way to tight so I've taken them back off the left side. Pics attached.

Were these steady springs used only on later cars? Do I need to bother with them?

According to the parts catalog, the "502320 spring, steady, between shoe and back plate" started at TS5443. So it sounds like your car should have them.

Brakes can be fairly stiff, the forces involved are much larger than you can easily apply by hand.

I would suggest a very thin smear of high temperature grease (preferably synthetic "brake" grease if you have it) on the backplate where the shoe rubs against it.
