TR3 starter disassembly rebuild early M428G bomb. Can someone explain what is happening in this photo? Acc to Triumph repair manual this should be a nut screwed on and secured by a pin through the armature shaft.

Is this a nut? Because it refuses to budge even in a vice.

Where is the pin?

How to disassemble from here?

Usually when you get the almost impossible to remove inset snap ring out everything slides off. I have read about that screw, but new have seen one. From what I have read the screw was only used early and not for very long. To me it looks like the piece on the shaft is broken, chiped, and froze or it would slide off. If you need some pics I will dig through my old starters and take one either today or tomorrow.

Yes, it is a nut. It is heavily staked, and I think I can see the head of the pin in the groove, at the top of the first picture. Based on the amount of staking, and the fact you must drill out the pin...I would make sure you have a replacement before I went any farther. Removal will likely ruin the nut.

If you are working on a early" bull nose" starter you have left the path of Reason and are now headed towards DESPAIR !! These
units have an Achilles heal that is age related, and has no replacement parts. Chance of failure 99.9% first 30 days.
Been there ,done that...

Hi G-wiz, A while back I tried to use a worn-out bomb starter + a loaded armature to make 1 for a spare - didn't happen because there weren't enough good parts. One armature was out because the shaft collar that keeps the inner snap ring in place was worn almost to the point of not able to retain the ring. You can see how thin the remainder is, and the pinion was very loose on the shaft.

Someone may have resorted to desperate measures to beef up that area on yours. If it is staked to the shaft like Steve says, best to leave it alone. But there should be a return spring in there somewhere.
