Rear Hub Removal???

Okay, I have removed all the pieces on my 1966 Sprite's rear end assemble up to but not the rear hubs. I have the 1 7/8" nuts off but the hubs just sit there.

Do they have to be pressed off or can a slide hammer type of device be used to remove them? They will not just slide off. I tried.

Just trying to replace the 46 year old bearings while I have the car COMPLETELY apart!

A glass that has 1/2 filled with a liquid is still technically full (the rest is filled with air)

Paul, before you go out a buy a new tool, unless you WANT to buy a new tool, try this trick I've used often

Take your brake drum, and put it on inside out. Screw on your lug nuts, and hammer on the drum while turning it. A rubber mallet is usually sufficient. Or, use a block of wood and an iron hammer. It shouldn't take much. They really aren't pressed in like you may think.

Of course, this isn't the right way, but it works every time, at least for me.

Peter's trick is probably easier but I used a piece of flat stock with appropriate holes and the hub studs to pull it off.

New tool ... $70

Using Peter's method ... $0 (if I can find the @!#$!$! lug nuts! I have the rubber mallet.)

Not needing new tool ... priceless!

Thanks Peter.

Pretty easy to make a "slide hammer" from some bar stock, drilled to the bolt pattern (only need 2 studs), some threaded rod with nuts and washers for each end, and a piece of weight scrap pipe that has a slightly larger ID than the threaded rod.

I put a small pry bar b/w the back of a stud and the wheel cylinder. Pry a little then go do the same b/w the opposite stud and the adjuster block.

I think you could flip the axle around and bolt it back up and wiggle to pop if off or tighten the nuts to pull too. You could install the drun like Peter said and put a bock of wood b/w the drum and axle tube, then tighten opposing nuts little by little to pull if off. Like he said, it doesn't take much.

Success! I used the Peter C method and got some aggression out of my life and the hubs off!

Now to try to get the 44 year old bearings out of the hubs and replace them.

Thanks all for your insights and suggestions!

Paul - You might consider the sealed bearings as replacements. They are self lubricated and reduce the dreaded oil leaks. I have bought a set, but have yet to install. Saw the idea on a uk bb, here is the bit I copied into my "how-to" file:

And I shall start raving about fully-sealed bearings (you know, the pre-lubed type with integral oil seals)
They're lovely. Last forever and supplement the existing oil seal- no more leaks, and no more damaged bearings from differential metal flakes.
SKF part# 6207zz
NSK part# 6207vvc-mav2

I use them The SKF double rubber ones and I am satified.

I found the best price on ebay (of all places).

Thanks 64rocksprite!

When I did a search I found all the different threads on just this topic! Couldn't find the NSK part but found the SKF part at www.vxb.com for $7.77 each, best price that wasn't directly from China...

I should have them in 2-5 days.
