Installing Heater Control Cable

Hello to all.

Soon I'll be putting in a heater control cable. First off, do the knobs in the lower center dash area simply pull off? I thought I'd ask before yanking on one. Does the cable extend right up to the back side of the knob? I can see where I can push the cable through the firewall (up near passengers feet, there's a grommet there) to the engine compartment. From there it's easy to see how to hook it up the the water valve.

Any and all tips and advise for this job would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I'll volunteer some possible misinformation. On the Healey i am currently working on, some of the small knobs are held on by a spring pin. Look for a 1/16" hole or depression around the knob, if so, poke it in an 1/8 of an inch and then pull the knob off. On your heater control cable, the cable may pull completely out if it is disconnected from the engine side. Bob

David,
The knobs on the TR6 are held on to the shaft by means of a spring plunger. To remove the knobs locate the hole in the base of the knob (usually on the underside) depress the spring plunger fully with a small rod or drift punch and pull the knob. This may still require a bit of prying as they tend to be tight, you may have to use some pliers to hold the shaft when pulling the knob.

Before I install any new two piece cables, I always put them in a vise vertically and add a bit of 3 in One oil. This allows gravity to take it the length of the cable while working the cable up and down. Any excess will drip out and you are good to go forever.
