Stand by...

BillM and I will be pulling the engine & 4 speed tranny then mating up my Nissan 1500 with a Datsun 5 speed and installing.

Sounds pretty straightforward, maybe we'll be done by noon?

For anyone who cares, if you buy something off Craigslist (or anywhere for that matter) be sure to check it out thoroughly.

I've got pretty good 1st, 2nd. 3rd and 5th gears.
And reverse works good too.

Bill & I spent the day together working on my car, I really appreciate the heck out of that guy! We had fun, got tuckered out and I guess we will be doing it again sometime in the near future!

Nothing there? If you have a BE style shift boot with the metal surround could it possibley be interfering?

To be perfectly clear I thought I should add here that I feel this is 100% my fault.

I'm the one who bought the tranny off a (no good, rotten to the core, SOB) Craigslist seller and even though he told me it was "perfect" it was my responsibility to check it out and I really didn't.

I put it in 1st and turned the shaft and the other end turned so I figured it was OK. I really should have at the very least tried all gears before paying the man.

Now I see why he wanted to meet in a restaurant parking lot instead of his home.
This is one of those "learning & growing" opportunities, I can recognize them so much easier now that I'm getting a 'bit' older.

At least I didn't pay him $400 or $500 - I would be really mad at myself for that!

I do feel bad that Bill spent his whole day and worked really hard with me and it has to be done again. I really enjoyed spending the day with Bill and especially seeing him come up with new tools on the fly - Bill is a master tool maker!

Like my Algebra 1 teacher used to say about his class: "Don't worry, if you fail this year" - ... it will be easier next time!

No, the shifter goes up to the place where 4th should be but it acts like it's in neutral.

May I suggest that when you pull it you rebuild the whole thing like new.

"May I suggest that when you pull it you rebuild the whole thing like new."

...nah, just fix what's broken/loose.

At the least it needs a new input shaft bearing and whatever is wrong with 4th has to be fixed.

Now that Bill & I know about the unique gotchas on this engine & tranny installation it should go much faster next time...

Well, as rebuilding a transmission is something I've never done myself I'll have to see if Bill wants to tackle that with me. I have no idea how long it takes, where to get parts, what all would be needed.

It is driveable, but I wouldn't want to take it up over the pass without 4th gear.
Of course there's the issue of dependability and that of whether I'm doing more damage by driving it.

I talked with Bill, we have a plan.

Since I drive this car I will have to get my other Spridget (64 Sprite) running safely so I can drive it to work for a week or two.

Then we will pull the drive train again, open up the tranny and see what it needs.
Gather the needed parts and make repairs, then reinstall.

This is a great plan, and I have to admit it was Bill who suggested it and is giving his time, effort, knowledge and garage space!

LBC people are the best! BillM is a prime example!

Why not ask a tranny place what they will charge to rebuild it if you bring it in. Check their experience on this as well.
