Speakers/kidney pads

Well Steven,
I'm not really sure on the size but I think it is 4 1/2 or 5 1/2 inches. I guess you are asking about the kidney pad on your TR6. I would go look at my TR6 but my kidney pads don't have speaker holes in them.

What's the largest size speaker that you can fit in the kidney pads? I assume they would have to be oval, and not rectangular.

Along the same lines, how do you plan on mounting a CD stereo in your TR6? I'm about to run into this problem after I get my carpet in. I looked at the center console and I'd need a cutting torch to modify it in order to get a newer stereo in there. I'd rather not go that route.

thanks

I just put a cd stereo in a 74 tr6 and I used drills and files and hacksawa and anything else I could get my hands on to cut the opening large enough for the stereo. I took about 4 hours, but it worked.

i measured the outer dimensions of the dealer mounted original am/fm/8track and it comes out to 7"w X 2"l X 7" depth. This is a universal fit with about 90% of the am/fm/cd players on the market. The depth is usually where the problem is..and since it rests on the transmission tunnel...with lots of room behind it...I can't imagine there to be too many problems. Maybe I'm wrong, and I'll find that out....hope not.

Steven,

You should not run into any problems with your speakers as long as you are only using deck power. If you are using an amp you still shouldn't have any problems. Hope this helps some.

Cheers,

yes they would be the kidney pads on my 1975 TR6. I wonder if the stock speakers would be ok for a new cd player? They're not original, as I replaced them back in the 80's with OE from the Roadster Factory. My next project is to pull the old radio/8track player out and put in a AM/FM/CD player. I'd prefer not to have to buy speakers, and hopefully I won't have to.

Steven,

Yes, I believe the size of the radio itself will fit under the dash fine. My concern is with the original opening and the amount of steel I'll have to drill, file, etc. to make the opening larger.

I just put a cd in my 74 TR6, standard din size as they all now come, with no problem. It's only aluminum and cuts well with a jigsaw. Traced the box on the back side, cut and filed. With the Pioneer model I used, I had no clearance issues.

Hello everyone.
Newcomer here.

What about clearance for the speakers?
Do a certain speaker type have to be purchased?

I put 4.5" round JBL's in my kidney pads on my 74 TR6. In regards to your radio, I used a Sony unit and mounted it in the trunk, along with a cd changer and power amp. I run the whole thing from a wired Sony remote. there is nothing in the cockpit to tempt anyone, especially when parked with the top down. what's really neat is that the remote display from the CD changer fits perfectly in the original radio cut out.
