installing a new top

I just purchased a 77 MG B, it needs a new top. I would like to know is this is difficult to install or should I pay the $ to have it done. thnaksd

It's not so hard.. I'd get a top that has the fasteners attached already. It's not worth the pain to save couple of bucks here..

While you have the top off the frame, take some time to inspect the frame and the header rail especially for rust and corrosion... Better to deal with it when the top is off, than to discover your header is rusting under your new top.

I'd drench the whole thing in a rust treatment, and paint it off the car.

I've but new tops on 5 B's and they are getting pretty easy now. Take your time, read all the instructions. Doing it on a sunny day helps move everything around, but dont' stretch it too tight, makes it a bear to close it when it's cold.

There's a nice article in the latest issue of British Motoring regarding new top installation. Ditto on the warm sunny day..It will make a huge difference.

I've installed 2 tops, it's not difficult, but can be a pain.

I've taken my mechanics advice and since purchased the coventry top from Moss and Proper MG,..they're original vinyl and have the header, seals, snaps and all, already done. Ya just screw it on, and you're done with it, end of story /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The 2 I have fit great, and look really good.

from my understanding of installing new tops, it's glueing it to the header rail that's the tricky part (assuming you got a top with the snaps already installed).

The article is actually for a triumph TR6 but I found the techniques and advice contained in it to be very helpful. Unfortunately I had already installed mine and as I was reading the article I kept thinking to myself..."oh, so that was why it so hard"...lol. Anyway you can get to the British Motoring internet version of the mag right from the Moss website. It is a pdf file and is about 15 meg so it takes a while to load but worth it. What part of PA are you from? Maybe for a beer, I can come over an help you do it? I have done a couple of them and had very little trouble just with the instructions that came with the top and a little help from a friend.
