Gearbox front oil seal

I pulled my tranny out and found alot of oil and grease in the bell housing. I figured that the front oil seal was leaking. So, I ordered one. Now I'm cleaning up the bell housing and I don't see an old oil seal anywhere, or anywhere it would go.

According to Moss it it's application is "when fitted".

Does a 79 Midget have a front transmission oil seal?

okay ... let me take a shot at this ... i don't know of any outright oil seal in the bell housing other than the gasket for the coverplate. there is no "seal" where the shaft comes through the coverplate ... at least i have never seen one. i have wondered why there wasn't a seal but since i never saw one i figured it's just the design. i do know that the coverplate hole has sprial groves that appear to funnel the oil back into the casing. i am not sure of this but that's my thoughts on it.

I know what you mean about the spiral grooves. The only reason I have even brought this up is because the seal is listed in the parts manual.
I ordered one, so when it comes in I will see if there is anywhere it could go.

keep us posted. my tranny is still out so if there is a seal, i want to put one in as well.

Don't forget you guys are talking two different transmissions here. The smooth / rib cases that bolt to the A series engine don't have a front lip seal, just the scroll seal in the front cover. Winner's Circle sells a front cover that has a lip seal in it, but this is not a factory item. I don't know what the 1500 transmissions had in them.

I bought that seal too. But I could not find anyplace to put it. I think some bell housings must be machined to accept the seal, but mine was not. I have a '79 too.

Most Spitfire and Midget 1500 gearboxes had replaceable front oil seals but there were some scroll seal trannys all the way to end of production. The seal carrier presses out of the bellhousing if you want to change to a lip seal. The first motion shaft is the same.

Ok, cool. So I can just replace the seal carrier with the o ring and oil seal?

My current configuration has the scroll seal.
