Greetings folks!!!
My father-in-law bought a 1961 Austin Healey Bugeye in 1970. He had it for over 30 eyars, and it was recently given to me and my wife. I have driven it lots of times, and it's an absolute blast to drive. Unfortunately, she was originally an upstate NY, and North Carolina car thus has had several rounds of rust repairs done. Not the greatest....my father-in-law was a painter by trade, not a bodyshop pro. The car has even been rolled.....with my father-in-law, and his brother in it. They both walked away from it unscathed!
Now, I have started to strip her, and she has rust in all the usual places. The floor needs to be replaced, rear suspension mounts, a-pillars just to mention a few.
Now I have looked at the rear suspension, since the rear mounts need to be fixed regardless....and I am seriously contemplating going with a four link setup versus the original 1/4 leaf and lever shock. With a lower mount where the OEM 1/4 leaf mount is, and an upper where the upper control arm currently is. Then you can easily use adjustable rod ends. Now the problem is, what to do about suspension. My one thought is to use coilover shocks. Weld a mount to the rear axle, then have them mount to the body somewhere. It is the "somewhere" that I am working on. My first idea was something I saw on a track car. Where they had a raised mount inside the trunk. On the bugeye, that could easily be done. Since there's not really enough space for a 14" coilover shock between the rear axle, and the floor. So cut the floor, and weld the mount on the inside. It is hard to explain, but once I get going, maybe I can illustrate with some pictures.
My question now is; anybody here that have converted to a four link, and how did you solve it?
