TR2/3/3A TR3 Oil Pan Leak

My OIl PAn leaks thru the gasket, just replaced it, tried straigtening the flange and it leaked after running for a few hours. Does anyone know if a rubber gasket is made and any sugeestions as to what type of sealer I can use. All suggestions are sincerely appreciated. Thanks

Hi,

Look for Hylomar sealer at your local auto parts store. That usually solves leaks if used that a new gasket and surfaces are carefully cleaned of all old gasket material and sealers. I'd suggest double checking the staightness of the flange, too, since over-tightening is the most common cause of leaks around the pan. I don't know of a rubber gasket, but have always gotten by fine with the standard felt/paper type.

Hi PlaidMan,
I prefer using Permatex Aviation Sealant for the oil pan. For me it seems to be a bit thicker than Hylomar and I feel that it will seal the pan gasket a bit better. I also get my pan gaskets from NAPA. They offer a better gasket made by Victor Rein (South Africa) that is slightly thicker than most of the LBC vendors. Also, are you using flat washers as well as split lock washers with each bolt? The trick to using Aviation sealant is to apply it liberally to both sides of the gasket and let it set up at least 1/2 hour before laying it in place. Of course, all mating surfaces should be spotless clean and dry before sealing. I never reuse an old paper gasket. And, torque well but don't absolutely crush the gasket, you will be distorting the pan as well.

Yep - over-tightening is pretty common; I had the problem with my TR3 as well. I took the pan and tried to flatten out the area around each hole, as they were all pretty "dimpled."

One thing I thought of doing, but never got around to, was looking for some sort of washer/flat plate that would spread the pressure over a larger area for each of the holes. Any thoughts on this out there?
