TR2/3/3A How to Mounting Oil Cooler on TR3

I plan on doing some sustained freeway driving, in addition to driving over the Oregon coastal range, and its been suggested an oil cooler would be a good idea.

Questions:

- What is the best positioning of an oil cooler on a TR3A. Ideally I would like to keep the crank hole accessible. I have been told it can go directly in front of the stock radiator without compromising engine cooling. I don't have an electric fan.

- Moss sells 10 row (3" H), and 13 row (4" H) units. For my purposes is there any reason to go with the larger 13 row unit.

- Does anyone have pictures showing how they have mounted an oil cooler on a TR3A.

This is how the PO had it mounted on the car...he raced it.....I am not re installing it. He customized the rad shroud to fit as well.

If you look at the front valance, it actually blocks air to the bottom 1/3 of the radiator. Someone fashioned a plywood air dam that mounted to the radiator protector to catch the air going under the valance and angle it back up to the radiator. This would be my first change and relatively easy to fabricate from wood, metal, or poly. Racers often cut a hole in the valance (as on the TR250 model), screen it to provide direct air and add an oil cooler mounted behind this opening.

Be careful what you wish for. Too cool oil is not a good thing. If you decide to do so you might consider adding an oil thermostat that restricts flow below about 185 degrees. I run an extra capacity aluminum oil pan with an oil temperature gauge and even on hot days it takes a while to get the oil to above 185. Running at 70mph on the Interstate it can get to about 220 but cools down quickly when back in traffic or slowing down. I use 20W-50 Brad Penn. Do some research on optimum oil temperature before you waste your cash on a potential leaker.
