TR2/3/3A TR3 Oil Pan Gasket?

My oil pan is leaking bad. I am goiung to put a new cork gasket with high temp scilcone sealer on it and was wondering if I should put the sealant on the pan, let dry and then put some sealant on the block also? This is my second go around with this. First time I made sure the pan wasn't bent and just put the sealant on the pan.

Been covered before, but take a little extra time and ensure that the mounting holes of the pan are perfectly flat. Over-tightening causes dimpling of the thin metal, and, of course, leaks.

Small hammer, nice flat surface to work with, and tap them gently back into form.

Sounds to me as though there is something else wrong. The sealant helps, but it shouldn't leak "badly" even with nothing at all.

Are you sure its coming out past the pan gasket, and not say, coming out the front seal and being blown back along the pan/block joint? I've also had trouble with the fuel pump/block connection leaking oil, and looking like the pan gasket was leaking.

Hey mountain man oil leaks are a pain and often difficult to tell their origin. It might be leaking above the pan, perhaps the front bridging piece is missing its gasket or maybe the pan itself is cracked. I have seen both those problems. I would try an assertion the origin first. Try fogging some baby powder in the suspected area after you wipe it down good. Those oil pans crack when people jack the car(po) up from them or a big rock or whatever.

I did check the other possablies of the leak and it is the oil pan around three of the rear bolts. I also made sure the pan is flat. What would be the down side of putting the sealent on both sides?

Well I know the racers have no problem using silicone sealant like that, but I'm not sure you need to have it set up first. Tony Drews, for example uses Permatex Ultra Black: rebuild shots.

I found his website a pretty useful visual reference of getting the engine back together, and also wound up using Ultra Black on the pan gasket. Will know probably in a couple of months if it actually worked.

Given a rear drip though - have you completely eliminated the thought that you are leaking from the rear main cap? That felt material was a major messy pain to install.

Hey Randy,
I have checked and double check and thank goodness my only leaks now are the oil pan. I think I'll try silicone on boyh sides of the gasket. I'll post how it works out.
