oil from rear axle shaft

Country flag
Offline
Somebody tell me if I'm right here. If the oil that comes out of the rear axle shaft is not staying in the end of the axle shaft, in the circular cup where it lubricates the bearings, and is dripping out of the edges of the circular end of the axle shaft, then my problem is the paper gasket, right?
If I'm right, what should I use on the gasket when I put it on? Something like wellseal?

Thanks!

Larry, still learning!!

There is also an o-ring in there. i generally use some hi-tack to make it stick good.

also, many people overfill the pumpkin. general consensus is that it only needs to come to within an inch of the fill hole - not right full (as far as your pinkie sticks in)

Pull the axle in/out, if it moves, the hub may be worn and the bearing is not sitting in there tight.
I just had this problem, oil all over the back of my wheel from a worn rear hub where the bearing and axle were moving in and out.
Speedi sleeve or bearing retainer or a new hub are the cures.

Hubs ok, no movement. I'm thinking about the speedi sleeve.

What should I use to seal the paper gasket?

Thanks

Darn thing didn't stop anyway - that's what started all of this! The last time it was on the road my wife had to stop it by bumping in to a tractor wheel in our back yard!

I rebuilt both rear hubs soon after I got my '63. Due to oil all over both drums.
Got new bearings (may not be necessary but they're cheap and you're in there anyway) o-rings, oil seals, paper gaskets. The whole rebuild is pretty painless and then you're good for another 50 years. If there isn't any obvious wear then you probably don't need a sleeve, just new seals and stuff....right? I smeared the paper with Permatex as I recall.

Yep, did the o ring and seals, was just unsure of what to use on the paper gasket. Thanks!

I am confronting the same issue, and do have the play in the rear hub. What is this sleeve, where do you get one, it would seem that seem that it would be more simple just to replace the hub. Is it? On a funny side, Before my divorce, I had the socket for that nut, but I can't find it.
