Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal

Hello everyone, It's been awhile. But been keeping busy. I know from doing some searches that some have installed one of the aftermarket rear main oil seals on their big Healey. But I am curious for opinions, especially since maybe there is now some miles on the given engines. One curious thing to me is that it seems that Moss and Victoria British don't carry them anymore. At least I can't find them on their web pages. Can anyone tell me what they think of them and recomendations on where to buy one if any?

Well Dave C, Healey Surgeons can probably provide you with one. However, from the installation point of view,on 6 Clyn Engines, the rear main seal cap and the back edge of the block must be exactly even if it is going to seal correctly. Also both end loops of the spring should be fully closed. Other than that I think a little patience will get you home---Fwiw--Keoke

Thanks for the quick replys. Why Greg, my computer just doesn't like me. When I went to Moss, I went into the Austin Healey section and searched for the seal. couldn't find it. then I got the part number from and old cataloge and plugged it in. (still in the Healey section). Came up no such number. Then I changed the search to include all Margues. Still no number. So thanks for finding it for me.

Such a seal was fitted to my engine when it was rebuilt, dont know how hard it was, but the engine doesn't drip at all.

I got the Moss seal... they still have it - part number 833-415.

I didn't have any problems, and it seems to be working fine. I don't have much detail I'm afraid, but here's a web page with some photos of what I did...

I've never installed one of these seals, but I ordered one (1) from Moss yesterday, for the BN4 engine I'm rebuilding for a customer.

Good tip on sacrificing one (1) of the drill guides to make a tap guide__threaded holes do like to be perpendicular to their surroundings!

I had one installed by British Car Specialist when they rebuilt my BT7 engine about 10 years ago. Still no rear leaks after 15,000 miles. Prior to the rebuild, I had to declare every place I parked as an hazard waste spill area......

FWIW, a knowledgeable source on the Healeys email list uses seals meant for small block Chevys. You have to machine off the reverse scroll on the crank, and mill a seat for the seal, but you don't have to hack up the engine/bellhousing adapter plate like you do for the Moss-type seal kit.

Something to think about--I have the Moss seal in a bag waiting for when I rebuild the BJ8's engine, but I'll investigate this approach before I commit.
