Crankshaft Oil Seal

How easy/difficult is it to install a rear crankshaft oil seal kit on a Mark I Healey?

I have heard they have a "scroll" to prevent excessive oil from leaving the block. Is it worth the effort?

A-H 100 cranks have to be machined to accept a seal, on the 6-cyl cars, the seal is installed aft of the scroll and can be installed in situ. Reported results are mixed, from 'outstanding' to "didn't do a dang thing," probably depending a lot on the correctness of the install. We put one on our BN2 and it still leaks, but I think it's from excessive sump pressure. For my BJ8, my machinist recommended a PCV setup instead, which has reduced but not eliminated oil loss through the bell housing.

By Mark 1 I assume you mean a 3000 Mark 1. I had a rear seal kit installed by British Car Specialist in Stockton, CA 25 years ago and it still is working perfectly. I have other oil leaks on my car, but not from the rear seal. As far as ease of installation, it was easy for me. I just wrote a check and they did the hard part.

With some kits, you have to machine the rear engine plate for clearance.
