I have noticed that my brake pedal is not returning to the up position after every stop. It will rise after moving forward though. Doesn't seem to be dragging...any thoughts?
I hope the return spring...I will check the manual and keep my fingers crossed. I don't mind rebuilding a mater cylinder, but I hate bleeding brake lines.
There's also a spring inside the MC that should be strong enough to return the pedal through all but the last little bit of freeplay. They also break sometimes but still work to some extent ... Mine came out in 4 pieces !
When I replaced mine, I found that no one had the spring listed for the TR3 application; but the TR4 spring works just fine.
I bought two when I found that one of my return springs inside the master cylinder, like Randall wrote, was also in 4 pieces. I now carry the second one as a spare, just in case.
It will still contine to work till the broken bits start scoring the bore where you want to have a good seal.
I think I bought it from Moss - Part No. 582-065 510815A "Spring - Girling Master Cyl".
It comes in a clear vinyl bag with the green LUCAS logo also marked "SPRING 6473425 - Made in UK 19/97".
Problem found. External springs good. The solution was to follow the old Air Force adage, "RTFM" (read the flippin' manual). The manual says, "Keep the vent hole at the top of the reservoir free and open or the brakes will drag."
I am sorry that I have now proven my stupidity in a large forum.
I also checked the fluid level and filled (1/4 inch only). I wanted to drive but I hear thunder from another mid-west storm on the way. But pedal now returns while sitting. Thanks!
Hey, that's not stupidity ! You successfully identified the problem, researched potential solutions, and successfully applied the correct solution to the problem. Lots better than most people could do !
I would have probably dropped it off at the shop to be fixed. Congratulations on solving a problem with your car. And by sharing, you probably helped someone else in the future as well.
Thanks for the positives guys it does make me feel better. It does seem though that a simple solution, most of the time, works. These are strong, well built cars. I should not get rattled when something goes amiss, throttle down the anxiety and read the manual before assuming the worst.
