Windshield placement

I'm about to place the windshield back on the car after replacing the crash pad and noted on the old application there is a black putty between the rubber gasket of the windshield and the car.. Any ideas what the best product would be to use here...>?

Do you have NAPA auto parts stores up there? They sell a sealing 'tape' made for windshields. I haven't used it, but it would sure be a lot tidier than something in a tube.

With a fresh rubber gasket and proper torque when you suck the windshield frame down onto the body, you really shouldn't need a sealant. A butyl rubber tape will interfere with proper seating of the gasket seal. I didn't use one and have no leaks. That gasket was made to seal without sealant. Plus, if you ever take it off with sealant, thus goes your paint.

I did not use anything (other then the rubber seal)on mine and it does not leak at all.

When I took mine off, the first time after 30 some years, there was no sealant under the seal. If properly installed not needed..

Nothing under the seal on my 4 when I took it off, beautiful bright original paint underneath with not a hint of rust bubbles and still nothing when I put a new one back. As has been said, the seal sets nicely as the frame is tightened down.

Nothing on mine when removed either. Note pics on previous posts or my site.

However!! Please DO seal the aluminum header to the top of the frame or you can expect a steady drip, drip drip from the visor mounts while driving in the rain.

Ask me how I know this.

when you put the bottom seal gasket on make sure you install it correctly, it should fit over the front of the frame and a lip fits over the interior part should be easy to figure out because there are 3 slots in the rubber that the three hold downs go through. you can also put a piece of small cord under the front of the rubber seal and when you pull the frame down the seal tends to roll under the frame,then pull the cord out and it will pull the seal out that got folded under the frame same technique as putting the cord in the windscreen rubber to get it back in
