Overdrive drain magnet-above or below screen?

I have always put the magnet beneath the screen in the cup of the brass plug. i.e. the magnet is between the screen and the plug trapping particles at the bottom of the screen. BUT an overdrive rebuilder told me it goes on top of the screen. I pulled mine out and sure enough there is a recess on the top of the screen that's just the right diameter for the magnet.

So, which way guys?

I also found two magnets stuck together in mine. Is that normal. each is about 1/8 in. thick.

And I thought I knew Healeys.

I think the idea behind the magnet is to trap all of the little ferrous metal shavings that are too small to be caught by the screen, in which case it would need to be on top of the screen.

It would seem logical for the magnet to be at the bottom to trap filings at the bottom of the screen and hold them there with the other crud at the bottom of the screen. Of course, having seen so many odd things on British cars, I can find a reason to justify anything - logic has little to do with it. My Hanes manual omits the screen as does the Moss illustration. Victoria British has it on the bottom. Anyone have a manual?

I didn’t see any evidence of the magnet in the shop manual. My owner’s manual says “Remove the magnetic ring, filter gauze and clean it. Re-fit the filter gauze, magnetic ring, drain plugs and refill the gearbox”. The wording implies (to me) that the magnet goes between the filter and the drain plug.

My BN2 has not had a magnet since before I owned it. I drained it once when switching to Redline MT-90. Drained it again recently, carefully filtered the RL, nothing showing in the filter or the screen. No bronze, no steel, no dirt. Put the same RL back in, never a transmission or OD problem.

I think all that "metal shavings" on a magnet would do is give a warning that something has gone seriously wrong "after the fact".

Maybe ignorance is bliss?

My BN7 has the magnet below the screen. I was the first and only person to remove the O.D. oil drain plug since I am the original owner.

Have a good day,
Ed

BJ8. The magnetic ring(s) goes between the screen and the plug.
