TR2/3/3A Filling TR3 Steering Box

It the proper place to fill the steering box the plug on top of the box or the hole in the tube (under rubber plug in shaft)? Wondering if the hole in the tube just lets fluid run into the steering box?

The hole in the tube. It's a whole lot easier to reach.

But it does take some time for it to run down into the box.

Are you using the factory spec oil or a thicker lube like Penrite? The Penright stuff is so thick I think you'll have to add that directly into the filer in the box....

I add the Penrite thru the steering column. It is slow so rig the funnel using towels, duct tape or whatever. Pick a hot day.

Have something else to do as you will add--wait--add for awhile. Do it at 10:00 on Saturday morning and listen to Car Talk.

If you need to fill the box from empty then it is probably worthehile removing the d/s horn and getting at the fill plug.

Yeh, I had to remove the horn to gain access. You mush be referring to a hot AZ day, since on a warm SoCal day the Penrite is still pretty thick.

Maybe I should let the bottle sit in the sun for a bit first!

The 1st time I filled mine (from the steering box plug) it leaked out the nut on the end tube pretty quickly. I tightened up the nut and am going to try again with the standard fluid to see what happens.

In Roger Williams book 'How to Restore Triumph TR2, TR3 & TR3A' He recommends that that you warm the oil in hot water for a while before using it. When the oil gets warm it will thin out and then thicken back up again after it cools.

Penrite ! No wonder you guys think sidescreen cars steer hard !
I use 75W90 full synthetic gear oil, which is thinner than 20W50 motor oil at room temperature.

There is a large oil puddle under my steering unit.

Is Penrite used full strength or mixed with the existing oil in the steering unit?

I've been told to us it full strength.

Randall - my box holds oil just slightly better than a sieve holds water. Hence the goop, aka Penrite.
