Static Timing

Greetings and happy New Year to everybody!

Started my BT7 for the first time in 4 years – extremely excited. I do have a static timing question I’d like to ask the group. The attached photo shows the position of distributor at TDC. Notice that the rotor is pointing just before #1 spark plug in the 7 o’clock position and the vacuum advance is in the 1 o’clock position. Seems about 45 degrees off from what it’s suppose to look like. I checked the drive gear and it’s in the standard 20-2 position. My thought is that the drive dog was installed wrong on the distributor. I could always change the drive gear so that the distributor looks correct. Just thought I’d see what the group thinks.

PR , My bn7 the advance is poiting more rearward as you said pointing at the hose running up to the valve cover in your picture. Also number 1 is 180 degrees from were yours is pointing,You sure your on the right stroke to be pointing at number 1 . If your using the 7 oclock postion for 1 I think to correct it you would have to pull the dist.
turn it 180 degrees then reinstall the wires to match.

Your absolutely right. I was 180 deg off - plus I had the plug wires off by one which ened up putting the distributor exactly where its suppos to be. No the vacuum advance points to the 10 o'clock position. I feel like such an idiot - such a simple thing!
