TR5/TR250 TR250 Static Timing

Howdy all:

I'm in the process of doing some work on the 250 to get it ready for the driving season, and I set the static timing yesterday. According to Haynes, 10 degrees before TDC is the place to start, and that's what I did. Seems to run fine. Any suggestions on whether this is optimal in practice? Greenie has his original dizzy -- not electronic.

Thanks so much!

B.

Thanks Doc! I have to admit, Greenie seemed a bit quicker after setting the timing, but that could just be my mind playing tricks on me! Wouldn't be the first time...

Just a word of caution. The TR250 had an advance and retard vacuum capsule which provided dynamic advance and retard (to reduce emissions during tickover). If the original emmission contol is in place, be sure to check your timing with and without these controls. You can simply remove the vacuum supply to the advance and retard capsule to circumvent the control. Be sure to plug any open vacuum lines when you do this.

With the retard connected and operating, you should see 4 ATDC. With it disconnected (or if it doesn't work), use the 10 BTDC figure. Vacuum advance disconnected while setting timing, either way.

Here is what I did

find a empty bit of road

slow to 15 MPH (US) in 4 gear and hit the gas

if it bogs down advance

Frank -- Just a quick question. Why would it matter if the vacuum lines are in place when setting static timing?

well, actually it wouldn't.

Thanks! I've been scratching my head on that one! Thought I had missed something all these years. Wouldn't have been the first time I've been doing something wrong lo these past decades.
