Pertronix ignition and coil

I am converting my 64BJ8 to negative ground. New alternator, new solid state neg fuel pump.

Thinking about also going with the neg Pertronix ignitor electronic ignition.

They recommend using their 40,000 volt flame thrower ingition coil.

Is it a safer bet to get their coil? Same brand, works well together, etc?

Why 40,000 volts?
How many volts does the stock coil have/give?
Will it affect anything else in the Healey?
Like sparkplugs, sparkplug gap, sparkplug wires, or any wires in the car?

Anything I should know, be concerned about?

Thank you

I just used a plain 12 volt coil from NAPA, nothing special. I have one on my 65 Ford truck and used the stock coil there too. Both work great the one on the truck is over 8 years old and has never missed a beat. My Healey is a 12 volt neg ground with alternator. Skip

Oh yea I used the small solid state fuel pump from NAPA too. It is made by Facet. Don`t use the square one it is so noisy you can hear it a mile away. I used the round hard plastic one on rubber mounts and it is great.

Here is my set-up for an MGA.
Pertronnix Ignitor & FlameThrower 40,000 volt / 1.5 ohm coil
Magnacore 7mm wires & standard cap on a DM-2 dizzy
NGK BP7ES plugs @ .04

The standard coil is about 17,000 volts ( Your car may start a bit better cold w/ a 40K coil but that will probably be about it) Sure makes ya jump higher though!

I drove my electronic ignition for about 1 1/2 years w/ the standard lucas coil w/ no problems even though MANY people said I needed a 1.5 ohm (matched) coil.

Spark gap determines coil voltage necessary to jump gap. use about .025 for the standard coil and about .035 for the bigger one.

I hope you realize that I will probably go down in flames for my recommendations. Everyone has their own idea about what works best. For example...I index my plugs.

I installed both the petronix ignition sensor and one of their new coils as a matching set. I also added new bosch platinum plugs gapped at .035 " . It runs / starts great now, not so great before I did this. I believe my main problem was the old, original lucas coil. If you still have your original coil, I would definitely install a new one with the ignition sensor....
You could check your old coil with an ohm meter across the primary side. It should be 1.5 to 3 ohms, not 11 to 13 ohms like my old one before i got rid of it. My 65 BJ8 would constantly backfire through the rear carb when I gave it gas until after I installed the petronix parts.
