Ignition wires to use with Pertronix distibutor

Offline
Fellow Healeyiods,
I just got a Pertronix Flamethrower distributor with neg. ground for my 63 BJ7. I have the solid core bumblebee wires. Anyway, the instructions say "Do not use solid core wires". Well, I'm having a hard time finding a wire set that will work. I need (7) 90 degree boots and metal crimp fittings
for the distributor side.
I have tried several 60s applications at local parts stores, even tractors.
I have not been able to find any that fit. It was just 10 years ago when I would go into a parts store and they would have bulk ignition wire and boots and the metal straight and 90 degree crimps to custom build an ignition wiring setup. I guess those days are gone. So, my questions are.
1.) Do I have to go with the fiber core wires?
2.) Where can I get the 60 degree boots and metal crimp ends that plug into the distributor?

Thanks!

Randy, I used the Cobalt wires and they work just fine. Just an FYI, I had an issue with a couple wires being too short and instead of trying to figure out why, I just ordered another set to mix and match. BTW, I just replaced my coil too as was told by many people that there is a possibility of ruining your new distributor with the old coil.

I just noticed you said you needed 90 degree boots at the distributor and these are not. Why do need 90s? I have a '63 BJ7 too and I did not.

My new cap has the wires coming straight out of the top as opposed to out the side as per stock. I wanted more of a direct shot to the plugs with 90 degree boots, but I guess a straight up and over to a straight plug would work but I would loose my cool original plug connectors that are at 90.

The original style caps are available order one.

Use solid stranded wire with resistor type plugs

Make up your own wires using end metal electrical fitings from a good parts store.

Changing the coil will just produce a hotter spark.

I too have a 63 BJ7 with a neg. grnd Pertronix. I've been using the fibre core wires without a problem. I also use a Lucas coil (gold) which is just a hotter spark. BTW when you say "solid core wires" what do you mean? If you mean those with a stranded wire inside they are really hard to find these days. Let me know of you find a source. Also, aren't the bumblebee wire sets made with stranded wire cores?

Just buy a stranded wire set for a big V8 engine and use them to make you a new set for the healy.

Also, aren't the bumblebee wire sets made with stranded wire cores?---Yep but costly

Hi Randy,

Have you considered using Pertronix wires? I have a set on my car.

Hi Randy,

I changed to Magnacor (https://www.magnecor.com/magnecor1/main.htm) composite 7mm (to insert into the cap) wires from solid core when I installed the radio and I have continued to shifting at 5K, without a miss, for the 4 years they have been installed. I am using a Crane CD ignition with an optical trigger and a 40K Pertronix coil. Although I ordered the wires without cap ends to insert and pin in the cap, I understand you can also order the wires with different ends so they can be made to fit your cap.

All the best,

I have bumble bee wire set with an original red top sport coil, and I have had great success using the positive ground pertronix. But I do not have a radio, so I do not worry about noise suppression and this may be why they do not recommend solid core wires. Just a guess.
