Overflow Catches

I have a questions regarding overflow catches. The one for the oil that I wish to install is one quart with a breather.
I am a bit confused as to the coolant one. Should it be basically the same without a breather?

And if so does it mater that there is no overflow?

Should it be fille about 1/3 of the way with coolant?

And finally does it mater if they are made out of plastic rather then aluminum?

Please advise.

Most coolant overflow tanks are plastic Pat.

It should not need an overflow but will need a breather so might as well.

Yep about 1/4 to 1/3 full when cold.

Should think you could find an aftermarket one at most any auto store.

I was wondering for maybe some solo laps what I would need, to keep the track dry.

Since, I am installing the breather, I figured why not do them both. Since the mounting space that I forsee is on the left of the radiator (where it attaches the rad support to the fender support) which happens to be where I presently have a 1275 overflow tank mounted.

Most are old 1qt. oil containers, pull tied to something w/ duct tape holding the hose in. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks, so I would be most likely legit with two 1 qt overflow tanks and a breather on the oil?

And the coolant doesn't without a vent?

1 for engine
1 for gearbox
1 for rear end
1 for radiator

(or you can combine any number of these)

Rear and gear (same one, ?)

Rad is a sealed unit?

I know it varies....

We (EMRA) only require them for engine and radiator.
One quart oil container for each works fine.
Be sure that you put them in a place where you can easily remove them for dumping. I vent carb overflow into oil tank as well.

Rad overflow does not have to be pressure sealed, since normally, it's already coming from sealed expansion tank.

Because most likely I be out there with you guys here in the NE. I was going to do one rad and one oils/(Carbs now as per your sugestion). I will have other questions regarding my harness and rollover bar. Is it okay is I pm you?

Just trying to build a multi-purpose car that I can grab a few sole laps on.

Wait, so the tank to the right of the radiator on a 1500 doesn't qualify as an overflow/catch can for racing purposes?

As for the oil catch can, anyone have a link to a reasonable looking (something better than a used oil qt container) that's still cheap? Also, where are you guys attaching them, valve cover?

The remote overflow tank that many cars have might qualify with some clubs. EMRA might let you skate by with one. But I think it would not be OK with SCCA. The overflow tank on most cars has a vent hose...that should go to a catch tank.

Here's a schematic of my oil catch can. The reason I have it connected to the carb intake is to provide some crankcase vacuum....this effectivley stopped my rear-main seal from leaking (before this, with just a catch-can-to-valve-cover hookup, the rear main would ooze). Not sure if this would work at more moderate (street) RPMs. The spacer is 2" PVC pipe. I am running a single carb as per our club rules for 1500s (S&S 2-1/16" Harley racing-type pumper carb).

Barely with us.....something like described above will get a notation in the logbook "fix by next race"

We sometimes see this type of thing.."the band aid approach"
but have weeded them out over time. Really funny (well nothings funny on track) is when plastic Home Depot clear tubing is run for motor windage venting and it collapses into jelly.

I use and recommend the thick plastic semi-transparent coolant recovery tanks that are sold in Pep, Autozone etc with the part number of 222 and in a green box...the maker is I forget. Comes with a 2" screw on top and bottom nipple which is perfect for water and a 14 psi double gasket rad cap....water level is visible. For oil you use a separate unit with a grommet and breather in lieu of the cap, and use aluminum bulkhead fittings attached in the side for vent hoses.

There is another nifty one that is plastic and viewable that mounts in a slide bracket....Toyota or Nissan I think....the boneyard yields so many things that crossover...

Here is my Brother's catch can.

This is mine........Engine + radiator go to the old windshield washer fluid container.
The pump discharge tube goes under the car.
