TR2/3/3A how to question for overdrive

I am sure you are right. The plug would be necessary to hold the pressure in the pump, and to provide a grip to remove the pump for a rebuild.

As far as ID'ing the tranny, the stamped serial number would likely give a clue. The overdrive label is normally under the shifter lever, and difficult to read. The mystery may have to wait until the next rebuild...knock on wood!

Surprise. The builders plate is lurking behind (i.e. in front of) the solenoid. Hard to read The number is "32/1763/001624" Armed with that I should be able to get it solved next week.
BTW the plug has, as well as a boss, a nice moulded cradle that supports the filter snugly. Not sure where magnets would go but I shall certainly find out and let you know, so we shall not have to wait too long!

Dr_Mike,
Better check that "nice moulded cradle" with a piece of steel or iron to see if it is magnetic.
I'll bet from looking at your picture, that you just found your lost magnet stack...
If by chance those are not the missing magnets, then you will have to remove whatever that is till you reach bare brass.
The magnet stack fits where that
"nice moulded cradle" presently is.

to Merlin, yes it is my magnet stack! Thank you
to philstr6, I had another look with my camera and your comment is correct.

As I understand it the bolt and spacer were discontinued at some point in favour of the boss on the big plug and a short plug in the bottom of the pump. Which is what I found. So the PO(s) had left it as it should be.

just for completeness I shall try to find out when they switched.

Thank you all for the input.

Dr_Mike,
I’m glad the missing magnet stack has been found!
Now make sure to take that stack apart and wipe all the magnet rings clean with a dry clean shop wipe.
Use some carburetor cleaner and clean the filter screen by blowing the cleaner from the inside of the filter screen out, allow to dry before reinstallation.
Also be very diligent in the cleaning of the recess in the drain plug and all sealing surfaces, both in the drain plug and the OD body.
Assemble the whole mess, drain plug, sealing ring, magnet stack, filter screen and install on the OD.
I usually apply a very thin film of Aviation Permatex to both sides of a new sealing ring before putting onto the drain plug.
Don’t forget to refill the gearbox!

That is correct. I believe the change point was when IRS was introduced, ie the model 1753 overdrive. The plug changed (with the boss as you've observed), as did the plug in the pump and the screen itself. But the parts are interchangeable (as a set) and the early plug wasn't available for some time, so it's possible someone has deliberately updated an earlier OD (as I have).

FWIW, the earlier setup does not appear to have had the magnet rings as original, and doesn't have room for all three of them (part of the reason I switched to the later setup).

That explains the shallow screen I got from Rimmer.
