Checking transmission/OD levels

As a reminder, this is a 4-sync gearbox with OD, car built November 1970.

No visible spot in the carpet to open up and check the fluid levels on the tranny or OD. Do I need to pull the carpet? Check from underneath?

Do the OD and tranny share fluid, or are they seperate?

If it's an earlier model, I think up to 74 or 75, it should have a dipstick hole just behind the heater on the hump. I think your car is a 70? If it is, the carpet should have a lift up tab on the hump and a rubber plug in the hole. A later model has a plug on the side of the trannie to check and fill with oil. Yes, they both share the same oil. There is no separate oil filler for the OD. PJ

Found it, and the fluid level was good and looked clean.

<sarcasm>Boy it's a good thing I don't have big hands or that would be really difficult to get at!</sarcasm>

Nothing like fishing down a blind hole with two fingers and no leverage. Geesh.

That's a brilliant idea, Tom. Next time I'm in there I'll do just that.

You can reach under the car and push it up pretty easily too - at least I can on mine.

+1 - and guys do we recommend non-detergent oil when there is an OD in the mix?

I've always used regular Castrol 20w50 with no problem.

Whatever you put into the crankcase and carb dampers.

A tie-wrap loosely looped thru the eye of the dipstick works as well as anything we've tried as a removal aid.

Refil through the dipstick opening when needed? My oil level was fine and looked good, but at some point I'll drain it out and clean all the OD filters and such.

Either get a long funnel, preferably with a flexible spout, or get a hand pump that attaches to an oil container. Fill through the dipstick hole. Put down towels in case the worst happens!

Thanks, Steve. Funny, the carpet in the Tunebug is so bad that I never worry about spills. I'm much more conscious in the B.

Fluid transfer hand pumps are so useful and don't cost much.
It is easy to get oil everywhere doing this.
