TR2/3/3A door strap checking tr3

I have a question on the door strap checking mechanism on tr3 doors. The little thingy that stops the door from opening too far. I kinda mixed up the ones I have, some from a square door (early) and some from a round door (late). I had not noticed before that some are 3 ½ and some are 4 inches long. It looks like the long ones go on the early doors. The whole door thing is freaking me out because I never really noticed just how far the doors do open. Or does one side take a different size, but that really does not make a lot of sense because the cars are very symmetrical. Anyways does somebody know for sure?

I will probably install on Wednesday afternoon.

They are both identical in size. I'll measure

Door checks are Stanpart # 650129, no left or right designation and no commission number change. Check Stanpart catalog page 88 plate AK. they are round at the front and square at the back.

Moss catalog only lists one door check part number for all TR3 cars. I have 3 inches of door stop showing in-between the door and frame. Door fully open. I believe the rubber stop is at least a half inch thick with the cotter pin. So, I would go with the 3 1/2 inch to start and see where the door stops. Carefully!

With-out the door stop installed the doors will swing out too far and hit the front wings and crease them. Not to mention peeling the paint off and denting the door edge itself.

Also do not leave your door ajar on a windy day with the side curtain on. That's why they sell replacement door stops.

Here is a close up of the door stops I purchased for
my 1969 TR6. I cannot tell you if it fits a square
or round hole. DPO Pedro removed both stops (from
the door side! ) and left me very odd shaped holes
with many file marks and grinding efforts.

He then installed a piece of wire with a metal washer
on one end and wrapped the washer with a bunch of masking
tape.

I have to rebuild the hole with sheet steel and then
install the door stops from the footwell interior.

Just guessing here: I think the door stop opening on
my car was originally rectangluar so the clip could
protrude. That would allow the 3/8" rubber to act as
a shock absorber and stop the door from over-opening.
Just a guess on my part.

If someone has a real life photo of TR3 and a TR6
door stop in-place on cars, I think SP and I would be grateful. Here is the parts photo:

That is totally different than a TR3 door check stop. The TR3 door check stop is a straight flat plate coming off the rubber stop with a hole in the end. It has a couple of tabs built in to lock the door open at the farthest throw but nothing as fancy as all those curves in your's. It also doesn't have that rivet hinge at the rubber stop plate or the squiggly flat bar with the hole.
I believe the door check principle is the same on both cars though. You push the end with the hole in it on the flat through the inner door slot and it attaches with a round headed pin mount (looks somewhat like the pin in a door hinge but a-lot smaller) attached to the A post frame which the actual door hinges are on. If it's the same as a 3 it mounts about midway down the door. I'll take a pic tonight and post it at the bottom of this message later.

The 1959 TR3A door stop shown was welded last year after a gust of wind sprung the door open and snapped the door stop just before the rubber but still looks correct. Sorry it's a little blurry.

Some of you may get a kick out of this. After 48 years of improved technology my 2007 Saturn Sky door stop still looks pretty similar to the TR3 but is made of plastic.

Here is a TR2-TR3 door check strap from my shop stock part number 650129. It is the only part number listed in my Stanpart Parts Guide for these models.

As usually the case, the part bears similarities to the later TR6 parts but is a different part all together. I presume that after 25 years many such engineering changes between the TR models have occurred.
