Whomever it was that suggested welding rod for the pin installation... GREAT IDEA!!!
That worked so well, it took a couple minutes per handle. A couple nicks in the rod, feed it in, and break it off. I only had 3/32 rod on hand but will do the passenger side with 1/8 rod that I'll pick up tomorrow. I bought springs from McMaster-Carr which may not match the stock pieces but seem to work. Same day delivery here in San Diego works for me, especially since I'm on the home stretch, just days away from first shakedown cruise.
