Balancing Wire Wheels - Old Method?

I'm at the point where I'm about to balance the wires on my "newly commissioned" TR2 with the bubble balancer I picked up at Harbor Freight.

And in the back of my mind I have this picture of old wire wheels (back in the 1920's, 1930's) using what looked like thick solder wire, wrapped around the spokes, as a balancing medium.

Am I crazy, dreaming this up, or was this really done years ago? Maybe I saw it done on racing cars with wires? I actually like the concept and would like to try this method of adding weight to my wires.

I have tried to google any information about this technique,
but was unsuccessful in coming up with anything.

Am I making this up? Help!!!!

That's what I used to do with my motorcycle. It works well.

I've seen it on motorcycles and bicycles as well. No reason it wouldn't work on a car, but I think you might have problems adding enough weight to balance it, and you might also have troubles with the solder sliding around. Besides, the TR2 wire wheels will take ordinary wheel weights that clip onto the edge.

Yes, used to do that back in the old days. You could buy lead "wire" specially for that, not use expensive solder.
