Source for SU balancing tool ?

Does anyone know where to purchase SU carb balancing tools? The type I want fits over the carb inlets and has a sensitive pressure gage that indicates the relative air flow in the two carbs. I have a Uni-Syn, which works reasonably well, but the other type appears quicker and more accurate. My application is a Rover V8 in a +8 Morgan, and it has two SUs pointing in different directions.

Is this what you're looking for?

If this is what your looking for, Terry's Jaguar sells them (not sure the cost). You can contact them at 800-851-9438 or 800-447-4587

Hope this helps. If you get them, let us know how they work. I will be needing something when I finally get my EType engine back together.
Cheers,
Basil

How often have you found you have to rebalance (and tune) your dual SUs? (I've heard a couple of opinions on that).

I've not had any problems with mine, but my Solex (VW) carbs have changed on occasion without much warning.

Basil,

Yes, this is one of several types of balancing devices. While it's not exactly what is recommended, it can perhaps be made to work.

I asked Terry's via email if they have them in stock. Thanks for directing me to them.

Regarding their use in general, I have used the Uni-Syn device on Jag and Triumph engines, and it works very well for balancing the airflow through multiple carbs. It's seems more accurate, and it's certainly more convenient than the hissing-tube-in-the-ear technique.

Scott,

I have not had a major problem with balance for SU carbs. I have to do it mainly after rebuilding or modifying them.
In the case of the Morgan +8, the manifold and carbs have been removed for cleaning and powder coating the manifold as part of restoration, so it will definitely be necessary to rebalance the carbs.

Billca, I have a 67 EType with 3 SUs and the thing that always frustrated me was how the manual tells you to "raise the lift pin 1/32 inch and listen what the RPM does. This is supposed tyo be how you adjust mixture! Ha! Right! I could NEVER hear any difference with these old ears, so I gave up on that method for mixture adjustment. Instead, after a rebuild I turn the mixture screws off bottom by 21/2 turns. Then I clean the plugs and drive around for a while. Then I take out the plugs and see which look rich and or lean and adjust in 1/8 turn increments. Then I drive the car some more (with re-cleaned plugs). I repeat this until the plugs look about right. Probably not the most scientific method, but it seems to work out ok for me. Of course the Gauges we're talking about are for a different adjustment.

Cheers,
Basil

Basil,

Terry's Jags says they will have the Auot-Syn balancing tool in a few weeks. I ordered one at $55 and will let you know how well it works. Thanks for the tip.
