Adjustable Steering how?

Working through my list of jobs and checks on my 65 BJ8 I have come to the steering, found the idler was OK full to level on oil however the steering box appeared to be lacking any viable sign of oil, I have filled it with a well known semi fluid oil and will keep an eye for any leakage from the seal. I was told the steering was adjustable can anyone enlighten me on how I can identify this and how it adjusts?

If the steering wheel is adjustable, there will be a collar behind it (as you sit facing it). If the collar is there, you turn it to the right to loosen the clamp on inner shaft and you can pull the steering wheel closer to you or push it further away. When you get it to your preferred distance, tighten the collar.

If you're referring to the steering and not the adjustable steering wheel there is an adjustment that can take some of the slack out of the steering. It's a set screw that pushes the peg on the rocker shaft further into the worm gear; it's on top of the steering box next to the filler hole and it should have a locknut on it. You can probably remove all of the slack; however, the wheels will not want to self-center after a turn.

Thanks John still a bit of a mystery behind the steering wheel is located what looks like a basic u clamp is this what you mean or am I mistaking that for something else. Looking on the parts lists various suppliers had I cannot identify the part.
maybe the car does not have adjustable steering (not that I need it seems perfect for me)

Here is a photo. If you have an adjustable steering column, you will see the collar (labeled, but sorry for the small print) behind the wheel.

Yup, what John says. Here's a picture of a non-adjustable in case that is what you have, it will look like this. Only hopefully a little cleaner.

image.jpgimage.jpgThanks guys, I omitted to say it's not the original steering wheel, And as Steve has been helping me out it appears not to be a standard fitting. photos attached.

Your trafficator (The piece with the turn signal lever and horn push) is the type that would be on an adjustable steering column. The steering wheel hub is an aftermarket one. So is mine, but mine is made to work with an adjustable column. You may be able to loosen the two clamp screws on your wheel hub and adjust the steering column some, but it doesn't look like you could adjust by much.
