So, the fun begins...my '63 Midget is now epoxy primed...man, that white brings out every little ding, crease, bend, wave....next week, when the epoxy's settled, they'll start all the bodywork...should be home soon!

Check out that engine compartment!

Looks like a solid start.

OK, I can kinda understand not wanting to remove the springs, but you should remove the radius arm/shock bracket. I'm fairly certain they were added after paint and were black.

That looks pretty good, Tony! I think I would be tempted to just leave it like that!

Lookin' good, Tony!

I, like Trevor, noticed some of the rear suspension still attached...springs, spring base plate, radius arm bracket. Are you going to have them sprayed body color? Then hand paint...black?

Brings us a question I've been pondering. I'm replacing the springs on my '62 Sprite as part of the project. They're off and it would be easy to paint them now...question is...how.

If painted whole, there will be some areas that will be exposed (no paint) when flexed; that will eventually rust. If I break them down to individual leaves I could easily Por-15 them or have them powder coated. Two problems I see with that...first, I doubt the paint would last long with constant rubbing due to flex, so back to square one...second, the multiple layers of paint (regardless of method) will add up and could affect the overall dimensions (ever so slightly)...the clearance of the U-bolt is already nil.

I'm leaning toward painting them (Por-15) as a unit and adding "touchup rear springs" to the list when it goes up on the rack for annual maintenance.

Thoughts?

I disassembled mine, then sand blasted and painted them, and then reassembled with teflon sheets between the leaves. I then removed two leaves. They fit back with the standard U-bolt. BTW, this is all an experiment. However, someone here (I think mike) uses a plate and 1/2" nuts/bolts in place of the ubolt for easier assembly.

Trevor - you're right...they were black...the other side is off & I just forgot that side...when I saw it in the photo, I said "D$%&.

I just didn't know what I'd get into removing those springs....the plan is to paint them black & cover them at this point so that when the car's finished all I have to do is remove the covering.....but the radius arm bracket comes off.
