Yes, this question arises fairly often among many in the British Sports Car community. And the previous answers apply well. My mirrors are out on the wings approximately centered in the wheel arch. Many think that is the proper location as it embues a more "rakish" appearance to the car, extentuateing the long hood and short trunk, (bonnet & boot). but some of the car didn't come with them at that location , hence the justification to move them back closer to the driver. My experience is that with them way out on the wing their usefulness is somewhat limited. You don't get an immeiate image in the mirrors when you pass something down the side, or as when a pretty young lady is walking down the sidewalk to your left. By the time she is centered in the far out wing mirror the image is so distant and small as to be useless. Now to move the mirrors back along the wing towards the windshield, consideration is worthwhile to determine how they will cause interferance with the ale induced belly when working under the bonnet to make repairssuch as carb adjustments. I find that with them half way back, they will be immediately in the way when working under the hood. At the location mine are, they do give the belly room to manuver without knocking them out of adjustment, but they still can be bumped during the process. I have thought all along that when I finally get around to restoring this car that I will move them close to the windscreen or maybe the door for sheer utilty reasons. Yet, it is proper to be rakish, and darn with the tradition of rear vison. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
