Side View Mirrors

I am about to purchase side view mirrors for my 1958 100-6
I have been noticing where they are mounted. Most are further down the fender toward the front of the car. Some are closer in and even less are close to the wind screen or even mounted on the doors. Does anyone know the "true" position or does it really matter? I think I would prefer to have them on the door.
Any suggestion?
Thanks
John

John--

This is a burning issue in the Healey community. I like mine above the wheels yet many otherwise-intelligent Healey drivers cry "heresy" and insist that they should be in front of the windscreen. Still others prefer the doors.

The only consensus is that there is no correct place and since it is your car you can put the mirror wherever suits you.

Michael you are about right. However, the location of the mirrors on the Healey is somewhat dictated by the accessibily of the retaining fasteners. The area above the front wheel axels is one available point. Futher back on the fender past the inner wheel arch is another accessible point and of course the doors.---Fwiw---Keoke

Yes, this question arises fairly often among many in the British Sports Car community. And the previous answers apply well. My mirrors are out on the wings approximately centered in the wheel arch. Many think that is the proper location as it embues a more "rakish" appearance to the car, extentuateing the long hood and short trunk, (bonnet & boot). but some of the car didn't come with them at that location , hence the justification to move them back closer to the driver. My experience is that with them way out on the wing their usefulness is somewhat limited. You don't get an immeiate image in the mirrors when you pass something down the side, or as when a pretty young lady is walking down the sidewalk to your left. By the time she is centered in the far out wing mirror the image is so distant and small as to be useless. Now to move the mirrors back along the wing towards the windshield, consideration is worthwhile to determine how they will cause interferance with the ale induced belly when working under the bonnet to make repairssuch as carb adjustments. I find that with them half way back, they will be immediately in the way when working under the hood. At the location mine are, they do give the belly room to manuver without knocking them out of adjustment, but they still can be bumped during the process. I have thought all along that when I finally get around to restoring this car that I will move them close to the windscreen or maybe the door for sheer utilty reasons. Yet, it is proper to be rakish, and darn with the tradition of rear vison. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

well this is an often asked question,i recently commented on this subject stating were ever the most comfortable placement and best vue you can atain for yourself is were the mirror belongs, mine are over the center line of the front wheels, yes it takes a great deal of getting use to and the images are smaller but that pretty girl is usualy sitting right next to me not in my rear view mirror!

Hi Giovanni,
Your question is one that I asked about a week ago. I got some really great answers. If you can find my Post I am sure you will be enlightened by the many possibilities and mirror sources.javascript:void(0)

Thanks everyone for all the information.
I like the idea of mounting them in the side curtain holes so I don't have to drill into my beloved 100-6 but I can't find anyone who sells this version. Any suggestions?
Who really needs a mirror if the woman is this close anyway.
Thanks

Anthony, that really hurt, but I suppose I deserved it.
Yet on second thought, if you were anything like the great "Marshmello", you would still be squintiing through that rear view mirror even with your partner at your side. At which point you would be spending much more time with your Healey, if you could still own it. It's better to take a solo run every now and then, do some squinting, then return home and forget it ever happened. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Giovanni,

If you are going to have mirrors I would go with the set up closest to the driver, eg using the side screen holes. This is the position on modern cars. In the US mirrors may be required by law, I dont know, but personally I have removed the ones I had which were in the traditional position at the front of the wing (fender). I feel they detract from the look of the car, they were not a standard feature and quite honestly,,they dont work!!

Then you are mirrorless when the sidescreens are fitted.

You may plan to never drive your Healey in inclement weather, but if you ever participate in a Healey tour or driving event, using the sidescreens beats getting soaked.

For the record, my mirrors were mounted on the fenders (C/L of axle) when I bought it 28 years ago and that's where they remain today. I consider them to be functional, and when adjusted correctly, they are.
