As I continue to transform the TR7 DHC to a TR7V8 (I like that sound best) I took the 7's drive line out and cleaned it up and out of courosity I wanted to see what they had in their gear box, looked like a mix of oil and ATF but what the heck is sticking to the drain plug in this pic? It does not seem to contain metal, it is just like a thick goop. I have no idea, but I am going to guess it is not good thing.

Right off hand I would say too many HTTP://
Under the pic in Photobucket I always copy and paste the IMG link. It works! {at least for me}
try it and see.

IMO, it does contain metal, but possibly only as very tiny particles, and mixed with various other dirt, decomposed additives, etc.

OK, I is almost midnight here but I could not stand it any longer, I had to pull my tans plug from my five speed and it looks similar but at reduced amount. I guess it would make sense for it to conatin metal for it to stick to the plug but the plug does not seems magnetized...

I'm not sure about the TR7/8, but the earlier TRs did not get magnetic plugs as standard. I've retrofitted all mine, though, with magnetic hex socket plugs from MMC.

Second time I did an oil change on my Stag, the new magnetic plug scared me silly ... found several pieces of a cam chain roller stuck to it ! The Stag is an interference engine infamous for having cam chain problems, so I immediately whipped the timing cover off (starting at the grille and working back); only to find that the chains looked just fine. Apparently, that roller had been roaming the oil pan since a previous failure ...

Yes the plugs are magnetized, and yes that is metal shavings. They all look like that unless you are fanatical about changing the fluid. When it gets to be a problem, you will know. It usualy starts with harder shifts into second and reverse when cold. GM syncromesh tranny fluid or Redline will help them last longer. Most of the gearboxes out there are pushing 30 years old and are probably over-due for a rebuild.

Or... strip of the last "/img" and just leave it as a clickable link.

Anyway, if you'd handed that drain plug to me and didn't tell me what it was out of, I'd have assumed it was from my Mini. The Mini gearbox shares its oil with the engine so it's always loaded with bits like that.
