Clutch Went South!

Took the TR3A out for an evening ride and had several people tell how much they liked the car. On the way home, just a block from the house the clutch went out. I got it around the corner and into the garage with lots of power and a burning smell. I guess it's time to install that Toyota five speed with a TR6 pressure plate... you just gotta love these cars!!!

I think I'll go with the Toyota since I have the conversion kit and transmission on the shelf in the garage...

Andrew or CaptRoy: My 68/69 Tr250/6 has a very sticky clutch. I read that means it needs to taken out and replaced. Does the engine need to be removed to to install a new clutch? Should I try to find a Toyota drive trane since it appears my clutch is bad?? I have already put in new TRF clutch master and slave gizzmos.

thanks,
tin

If you're only doing the clutch, it's a lot less work to only pull the tranny thru the interior. To pull the engine/tranny you still have to tear down the interior and also pull the hood, drain cooling system, disconnect wiring, motor mounts, exhaust and maybe other things to give clearance. Did it both ways over winter/spring....don't ask why!....if only clutch I'd opt for tranny only.

The main advantage to the Toyota gearbox is that it is a 5-speed. I would suspect a 5th gear might be of limited use in Puerto Rico.

Removing the gearbox thru the interior is sort of like working a tricky puzzle... one where the pieces weigh 80 lbs. Straight-forward but a bit of wrassling is involved.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif Plus a properly set up TR 4-speed can be a real pleasure to shift. And learning how to pull the transmission out of a TR6 is a right of passage for TR6 owners. One of many. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Now ready for my fourth (4, quatro) tranny pull. I so hate that that I am concidering pulling the whole engine. My back can't take it anymore and all my neighbors' shades are pulled when I come knocking.

'scuse me, that would be my 5th time!
