Hello everyone,
The clutch on my '74 'B ceased functioning over the weekend, and I had to be towed home.
It's been a few years, but I replaced the clutch master at one point after the original master failed. It was a rusty mess. I also changed the hose, slave, and the metal thing whose name escapes me. Can't remember offhand, but I may have changed the slave an additional time since then. The parts came from a company in Knoxville, TN. While they were functional, I had to remove the brake master cylinder cap in order to remove the clutch master cylinder cap. That didn't happen with the original equipment part.
About a month ago, I flushed and bled the clutch system. The fluid that came out was very black. I bled it 'til it was clear. The fluid that's visible in the reservoir right now also looks pretty dark. Is that a sign of perished rubber?
Moss sells a clutch cylinder that looks like the original, stamped Lockheed Made in England for just under $200. They also have an aftermarket unit that costs around $28. Needless to say, the cheap one is hard to ignore and I'm not entering any concours shows any time soon.
Has anyone used the cheaper cylinder, and if so, are you able to fill it without taking the cap off of the brake master cylinder?
Thank you,
-William
