Wedge Clutch Problems - TR7

I have seen postings on here that described a 'sticky' clutch on many TR7's. Currently I am experience occasional times when shifting is near impossible. I seems as though the clutch has NO AFFECT but at other times it works flawlessly.

If I had a stuck clutch how would I know? If my clutch is not loosing fluid, not stuck and works occasionally, what might cause the shifting problem?

If you push in the clutch and the engine will rev freely, the clutch is not stuck. You could have several problems. Your clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder may be worn and letting fluid leak by at certain times. You might have air in the system therby not allowing the throwout arm to fully disengage the clutch. You might even have some sort of residue on the flywheel not letting the clutch fully disengage(burnt engine or gear oil come to mind). The only other thing I can think of is worn syncro's in the trans. I'll bet it's a worn master or slave cylinder. Well that's my $.02 worth. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The other possibility is a worn out release bearing, which is often denoted by difficulty engaging first, and reverse. In this event, it requires disassembly of the clutch to determine. If this is the fault replace the complete clutch assembly. Another symptom of this is sudden takeup on leaving a stop. Start with the clutch hydraulics first though.

when i had the wrong fluid in my transmission it was hard to shift when cold. there have been several threads on the best transmission fluid. i know what i like, but i didn't have much success with 80/90 or 75 wt transmission fluid.

When this problem is occurring the engine is laboring or trying to die when I'm stopped. I can keep the rpm's up and it will stay running but you can tell the clutch is having no or limited affect.

When its not a problem, most of the time, there is no problem when stopped and shifting is a breeze.

I've had driven cars (Japanesse) cars with worn clutches and that has a completely different feel.

Any other ideas or suggestions.
