Bumpers [Rechrome or New via Moss] ??

Hi all -

Just ordering the last bit of parts before I do the fun stuff - put them on the car !

Any opinion either way on replacement chrome bumpers or re-do via a local chrome shop ?

Seems for both front & rear - chrome only - should be in the vicinity of $650 from Moss (a bit more than I really expected).

Any idea if rechroming would be in the same ballpark ? What I have is in good shape (not dings or bends) - just rusty and lacking of any good chrome.

head down to your nearest drug/grocery store. Wander over to the magazine rack. leaf through a few of the hotrod/street custom classic magazines.

Strong possibility of finding a chromer advertising in those magazines. buy the magazine, or copy the info from the ad.

Supposed to be one in Texas, dunno where or who exactly, gets real good reviews out here in Hawaii.

My one benchmark is a friend who had a larger bumper done locally for 200-something bucks. I'd look into replating before buying a new one.

Keep it simple, call a local body shop or auto dealer with a body shop and ask who they use for recroming, you will probably be happy with the results.

Hello George,

my perspective in the UK is that many new parts have inferior chrome. I don't know where Moss source their parts, but after poor results with buying new I will now have brightwork re-chromed by a reputable plater. I suspect the cost will be higher but the results should be much longer lasting.

Hi George;

Check out My Thread; "To Chrome or Not to Chrome"; Is that a Question? or something like that; Recent Thread:

I had purchased an OEM Luggage Rack for $65.00 from a BCF Member; No Dings, Dangs etc: I started shopping for "Chroming Houses" and found them All, but to My Surprise, Man are they Expensive! My Rack was from $350 - $400.00 & Min. 12wk Delv!! I could have bought the Rack from Moss for $375.00! I did`nt physically see the Moss Rack so I can`t comment on Quality:

I did get It "Mirror Polished" locally here in NE PA & came out "Great"! $125.00 & Approx. 1-1/2wk Delv:

Should You need Platers Info. I have Several: Just shoot me a PM or Email Me/ toysrus@ptd.net / I`ll be happy to send You All the Info I have:

Don`t have a Stroke when You get quoted Costs and Especially Deliveries / Hope Your Not in a Hurry!!!!!

Regards, Russ

That really sounds about the same here. I found about 15 different places in the Copenhagen area that does plating with chrome, nickel, gold etc. but the prices are way out of this world. It makes one wonder where the aftermarket parts suppliers are getting it done. Probably the same place the aftermarket parts are made. China

Expect to pay about $600.00 to get your bumpers and over riders rechromed, most shops will fix small dents at no additional charge and some will fix magor dents/flaws for extra. Rechroming as many of you know is not a cost savings deal, it will be about the same or more than catalog replacment bumpers, so why would you rechrome? You would rechrome because the weight and steel thckness of your factory bumper is alot better than the catalog bumpers. My bumpers on my 67 MGB GT look good from 10 feet away, but upon close inspection you can see spotting beneath chrome from age, I think when it gets to the point I can't stand it any longer, I'm going the rechroming route, becuase I want the quality the factory bumpers provide and most US rechromers chrome quality will better than it was originally from the factory and way beter than the aftermarket replacement bumpers. Rechrome not becuase you are trying to save a buck, rechrome because you want the best quality, and willing to pay more to get it.

George -

Check out this chroming service. They are just over the PA line, near Butler, PA. I used them years ago on some Corvette bumpers and the quality was great for a reasonable price.

Thanks all. Some great ideas on how to find a reputable re-chromer. Really had no idea. Will go on the hunt.

John gave the link for Paul's Chrome. I've used them before and was very pleased. The new repro parts are much thinner than the originals and the plating is not as good. Replating is expensive because of the extreme amount of labor required to strip and buff the metal. The manufacturer
has the advantage of the parts being new and requiring much less labor to prep for plating, but they also use too little copper and nickel sometimes to get a durable plating. In the old days, there were less environmental regulations and the chemicals were different. Most new parts need replating much sooner.

I'm going to take a BE grill, front and rear bumpers and e-brake handle to Knox Custom Chrome (see link in Jack's posting)next week for an estimate. I'll post the results of my visit.
