Am I being unrealistic?

Am I being unrealistic to expect to find a very good condition, chrome bumper MGB driver with no dents, no rust, no bondo, and not in desperate need of a paint job, for $5500 max?

You may, but it will take some looking. I bought my 1970 MGB 1-1/2 years ago for $5,500. Good mechs, clean, rust free, good paint. Of course there will be little things you will want to do along the way.

Keep in mind that it’s all a matter of trade offs. You might want to consider looking at a vehicle with little or no rust, over a car with great mechanicals. Something else to consider is if a car has new paint & a fresh interior, it could be hiding something that might make your bargain not such a bargain after all.

The 78B I picked up had a really clean body and was barely running. While the engine has some high miles and couldn't get over 45MPH. Because of this I managed to talk the guy way down in price. Turned out that most of the problems was related to electrical issues. Being an Electronics kind’a guy I had the car running like a top after a few hours with my trusty multi-meter.

Body Cancer is the worst – keep looking, be patient, thorough and something will turn up.

Anything is possible hang in there, keep looking and always try to find something wrong no matter how small. Be patient and keep your excitement contained and you will find your car. It took me 1 1/2 years to find the best XJS Jag for under $10k. That was 7 years ago.

in the current market, you will be looking for a while to find a very good CB car at that price. you can find decent cars that require a bit of freshning at that price though

Where in PA are you??? I know of a 71 B that has been sitting for 8 years with a bad clutch that lost storage space and she wants $2000 for it. It is sitting in a driveway with a for sale sign on it and seems to be a diamond in the rough. She says she is going to start advertising this weekend, so it won't last long I am sure!

I just sold my '78 spit for $5200 Canadian, and B's go for much more than that out here. Most $5000 B's whether they're in Canadian or US dollars will still be projects, I reckon.
You might be able to find a rubber bumper B for that, but they're not cheap either. Still, deals can be had if you can find one before it gets advertised.
My spit was in very nice shape, with a mediocre respray, no rust ever, but still needed things done like differential, tranny leak, interior redo, etc...
